Science is typically associated with reading from a complicated, lengthy textbook. However,
this is not what science society does. Science is about exploration, discovery and learning how
the world around us works: this is not done just by reading from a textbook. At science society
we do exciting experiments and fun-filled challenges such as a series of kahoot quizzes that
have taken place this year. Science society provides you with the opportunity to interact with
those around you who have similar interests and gives you the chance to challenge your
thinking. It is a space where you can voice your questions and ideas and find answers, there is
no limit to what you will learn in this society.
Scrabble is a game in which players build up words on a board from small, lettered squares or
tiles. Scrabble society is a society where we explore the fun of learning new words while not
really realizing it. Members of this society usually come with their friends each week and they
really enjoy Scrabble not asa board game but as a game that brings everyone together and
improves their communication skills and English. We also learn how to play as a group and
individually and learn how to make choices with the best output, for example, a word with the
highest points. Players aim to maximize their score using this point-based system, so it also
includes Maths as well! It happens every Wednesday afterschool.
Eastern drumming is an integral part of Sri Lankan culture. We see many people
playing the drums in peraharas and other ceremonies and drumming society helps pass
on these traditions and allow members to preserve and better understand our culture.
Throughout the year the drumming society has taken part in many assemblies, and
every Wednesday we hold meetings where we practice older beats that we’ve learnt,
making our own beats and sometimes teaching newer members. As a society we have
grown to consist of nearly 20 students. We’d like to thank all our members who came
for every practice and assembly contributing to our success this year. To finish we
would like to thank our teacher in charge Mrs Bollegalla, who has contributed greatly
to the success of our items as she not only helps us find a place to practice, but also
supervises each of our considerably noisy practices.
